Rosa’s: Big on Vibes, Great on Flavour, Just Light on the Toppings

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Between the dreamy garden setting, quality ingredients and that perfect wood-fired crust, Rosa’s delivered, we just wished they were a little more generous where it counted.

Rosa’s was our very first stop on our Canberra weekend, and it set the tone straight away. Tucked among leafy gardens and swaying trees, it felt calm, easy, and just a little bit special. We grabbed a spot out on the back deck, soaked up the sunshine, and settled in, a simple, lovely little slice of Italy to kick things off.

To start, we couldn’t go past the Prosciutto pizza, topped with San Daniele prosciutto, fior di latte, Parmigiano Reggiano and rocket. Straight out of the wood-fired oven, the base was crispy, crunchy, and exactly what we’re always hoping for. Paired with melt-in-your-mouth prosciutto, it was pretty close to perfect.

Our only gripe? We wanted more of that prosciutto. The quality was unreal, some of the best we’ve had, but the portion felt a little light.

We’ve had our eye on a Panuozzo for a while, so when it popped up on the specials board, we weren’t saying no. This one came loaded with mortadella, pistachios, zucchini and fior di latte, basically the lovechild of a pizza and a sandwich (and yes, we’re into it).

It was light, fresh, and actually perfect for the warm weather, not as heavy as a pizza, but still super satisfying. The mortadella was delicious… we just wish there was more of it. The rocket kind of stole the show, and the mortadella didn’t quite get its moment.

We also grabbed the fries with house seasoning and garlic aioli, and these were a solid win. Crispy, crunchy, and exactly what you want from a good fry. The aioli was creamy and full of flavour, but the real surprise was the seasoning.

It wasn’t your standard salt situation, it had a unique kick that reminded us (in the best way) of that Szechuan-style spice you get on Chinatown skewers. Unexpected, but we were very into it.

There’s a lot to love about Rosa’s, the setting, the atmosphere, and the quality of the ingredients are all there. But when it came to the hero ingredients, it felt like they were holding back. And for two curly noodles who don’t do things by halves… especially deli meats… it was just a little sopressing (a joke for our deli meat lovers out there).
